Wow! President-elect Obama
I wanted to write something profound about the election we just had. I wanted to compose something witty on the the great American process that we call the presidential election. I keep thinking I've made it all up, and it was just a dream. But no, there he is everywhere, President-elect Obama. I don't think of him necessarily as a black man who was elected president of the United States, but as an intelligent, well-spoken, inspiring American, a father and husband, a man of mixed parentage (no matter where they came from) who happens to have been elected president of the United States. But then I have the luxury, some might say, of not being a black person in this country. I read recently that more white Americans than black thought that they would actually see an African-American president in their lifetime. Wow. That is profound. And I can't write about a history or a culture or a people that I have only lived on the margins of; I don't feel qualified to say to an African-American friend, "Hey, I understand how great this is for you." I can just appreciate the tears of joy and the looks of pride I saw on the evening of the 4th of November. All I can offer is my sincerest "Yahoo!" that the nation elected an intelligent, well-spoken, inspiring, American father and husband to be the 44th President of the United States. And even more exciting for me, this time I voted for the guy who won. Yahoo!
