The darkening sky began to reveal the starry mass that I had come to depend on living out here in the wilderness. Some may think that looking up into that sparkling vastness would leave you with a feeling of smallness and inconsequence. I have never felt that way. For me, the heavens were an anchor and a comfort. This will always be, it whispered. At least in the short time you are here to see it. A slight breeze stirred some fallen leaves on the porch and kissed Sadie’s tail hair. The old spruce at the corner of the yard seemed to shudder slightly, and then was still. I noticed my toes were getting cold, so I set my cup down, lifted Sadie’s head off my lap, and stood up. As I reached down for my mug, Sadie growled. I looked up, into the trees, and stopped short. A wolf was standing at the edge of the forest, looking straight at me.
